When will my bees emerge?

So , we’ve been asked when the bees will emerge.  I wish I had a simple answer, but it really depends on the species that nested, when the nest was constructed, and your elevation.  Most of them, at this point, will probably wait until 2014, however, I just had two nests emerge yesterday.  We still have another 6 weeks or longer for the bees to fly, so bees emerging now will have plenty of time to complete one or more nests.

How do you know your bees emerged?  There will be a nice big hole in the nest plug.  So please remember to report holes in your nest plugs when you submit your data.  This will tell us if your nest has successfully produced offspring.  (Also, certain parasites dig their way into nests through the plug, but they often make smaller holes.  Parasites = diversity, so that is good too.)

If your bees haven’t emerged, don’t worry.  Many of our species produce only one generation per year.  We wouldn’t want to see spring nesting species emerging now!!
